More for the Hockey Experts
I have another question for the hockey experts. Why is San Jose ahead of Vancouver in these standings? If these aren't ranked by points, then by what criteria are they ranked?

In the NHL, there are two conferences (East and West) and each conference is made up of three divisions. The top eight teams from each conference make the playoffs, but if you win your individual division, you are automatically bumped up to one of the top three spots in each conference. So in this case, San Jose is leading its division (the Pacific), while Vancouver is in second behind Colorado (in the North-West division). You might ask why... I like the system, though. It means that a really bad team won't make the playoffs just because they play in a weak division, but there is still some reward for being the best team among the five or six you play against regularly. - Luke, Tuesday, March 9, 2004 |
