Question for the Hockey Experts

I guess I wasn't watching hockey back when they decided to change the whole home/away uniform thing, and I'm wondering if someone can explain it to me. I can't tell if they just randomly pick the darker or lighter versions of the uniform, or have they reversed it from what it used to be (lighter at home, darker away). If you know why this happened, and can explain the new system, please post a comment...

One excuse they gave back in the day was to give the home team fans a look at the road-jerseys. But it is very unpredictable now, most teams even have a 3rd or 4th uniform, not to mention the "Classic" uniforms. It's all about marketing, and trying to sucker away as much money from the consumer as possible.

In recent history they have switched it from year to year. One year light jerseys are home, the next it goes to dark.

The alternate jersey thing started a number of years ago, with i believe the chicago bulls, donning black jerseys for playoff games, subsequently the black jerseys became a massive financial success and many other teams/sports followed.

Biggest selling jersey in the NHL right now is the Oliers third jersey.

This is the first year in my lifetime that dark jerseys have been regularly at home. I believe they used to do it back in the '40s or '50s or something. I think the NHL's excuse was to show the home fans something "new".

In addition, there is the "third jersey" that most teams now sport once in awhile. There is no particular rhyme or reason to it; they just wear them now and then, usually at home, but in the past they also wore them on the road. Since the third jersey is usually dark, the other team must wear white no matter where the game is.

Finally, just to give you a headache, certain teams this season are wearing "vintage" jerseys on select occasions. The Canucks, for example, are wearing the uniform they first wore in the early '70s. Of these, there are both dark and light (white) versions, but then, to complicate things further, one team, Montreal, is only wearing a white vintage jersey, so the other team will always need to wear dark.

Confused?

Yeah.

In short, the NHL has thrown organization and normality to the wind. Any jersey! Any time! As Michael said, it's all about selling merchandise.

And I *hate* that Oilers third jersey. Blech.
