Meet the Press
The Daily Show's, John Stewart has an amusing take (17.8 MB) on last week's interview of George W. Bush by NBC's Tim Russert. Some would criticize editing down such an interview to make someone look bad, and so if you're in this camp, I suggest you read the full transcript of the interview. Yesterday, I saw an excellent documentary called "Fog of War". It's a film about Robert McNamara, the US Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War. In it, McNamara says that as a politician, you learn an important rule when being interviewed: Rather than answering the question you were asked, answer the question you wish you were asked. This seemed to ring true as I read through the transcript of the interview with George Dubya. And sometimes, his answers are so non-sensical, you can't even figure out what, if any, question he is answering. The only thing lacking from the transcript (something that John Stewart really highlights) is the body language. From pauses to blank stares, the transcript really doesn't tell the full story. I guess, though, it might be hard to objectively record this body language. At any rate, I think it's important to read though this interview, especially if you will be participating in the next US Federal Election. I think my favourite quote from the interview is when Russert asks Bush if he will testify before the commission analyzing the intelligence used to start the war on Iraq:
Russert: Will you testify before the commission?
President Bush: This commission? You know, testify? I mean, I'd be glad to visit with them. I'd be glad to share with them knowledge. I'd be glad to make recommendations, if they ask for some.

What a buffoon! (Him, not you)... if I were an American I would be so embarassed to have him as President. Though, I suppose we've had our fill of embarassing politicians here. - Joanna Schultz, Monday, February 16, 2004 |
