The Incredible Machine

Some of you might remember a neat, but mostly useless piece of software called The Incredible Machine. It let you build those types of machines you might see in a Wallace and Grommit film or the board game every kid wanted, Mouse Trap. where you could have a mouse spinning a wheel that released a ball down a tube, that flicked a switch to ignite a flame that lit a wick, etc. Physics and mechanics at their best. Well, those of you who remember this software (and anyone else, actually) might be interested in watching this incredible Honda Accord commercial. The commercial took 606 takes to get it right, all about which you can read here. (Thanks to Jeff for the link.)

Rube Goldberg was the guy who made these kind of machines famous: http://www.rube-goldberg.com

You might also want to consider Peter Fischli and David Weiss as the source/inspiration for this Honda advert. See their 30-minute film, Der Lauf Der Dinge (The Way Things Go), which was made in 1987.
