Credit Union Gone Crazy, Revisited
I just received a phone call from Jeff (or is it Geoff?), the general manager of Coast Capital Savings (Georgia Street branch) in response to a previous posting made. Actually, in particular it was in response to a parody website (now taken down; see Google cache) posted by none other than Michael Wood.So to set the record straight, Coast Capital Savings did indeed rectify the situation in an expedient and apologetic manner. They weren't sure exactly why this form letter had been sent out, but I was assured that no action was actually taken, nor would it be.
However, little did I know that the original posting about this incident in combination with the resulting parody site would cause quite a stir within the corporate head office at Coast Capital Savings. When Jeff/Geoff contacted me by telephone about half an hour ago, he said that the corporate and security powers that be were getting pretty excited, starting to speculate that either we were trying to commit fraud or engage in some other criminal activity. They were ready to call the RCMP had it not been for Jeff/Geoff pulling the reigns on them, telling them to settle down so he could actually contact me before it got too serious. I am of course very glad to see that a person there in a position of power had the common sense not to overreact to what amounted to creative expression in response to a silly form letter sent in err. If you're reading this Jeff/Geoff, I thank you.
To the security and corporate powers that be at Coast Capital: the next time something like should happen, I would encourage you to actually take five minutes out of your busy schedule and actually fully read any material which may for whatever reason seems criminal or otherwise corporately offensive to you before going crazy over something that was really nothing. It was really no problem to take down the offending page after being politely asked by my branch's general manager. Unless of course you like to throw money and resources away by getting lawyers and the police involved.
Incidentally, as a result of the knee-jerk reaction by the security people, our account was suspended today, which explains why were were not able to deposit a cheque into our business account. I've been told this should be fixed either tonight or tomorrow morning.
I suspect we shall soon be moving our accounts to the Royal Bank: an institution with whom we have yet to have any problems, and who currently houses our business account for our other business, Retrix Hosting.
PS: Take a look at the parody site, courtesy of Google's cache. This, I'm afraid, we cannot take down.
PPS: Being the curious types, we decided to investigate how Coast Capital Savings even became aware of this site to being with. A bit of digging into the webserver log files, and we found the answer:

As you will see from the above line, the referring URL is a Google search for coast capital savings surrey metro. The offending parody site is the seventh link on the Google result page.

I told my sister about this ridiculous fiasco. She wondered if they know that you are connected to us since her calls to Coast Capital weren't being returned. I assured her it was a coincidence, but was it...WAS IT? Who knows how deep this crazy Coast Capital conspiracy goes. - Joanna, Wednesday, March 26, 2003 |
