Redefinition is Fun
Tonight Mike and I were discussing what some like to call "parallel parking". We came to the conclusion that not much about the process is actually parallel. In fact, as far as we can see, the only parallel part of the process is the pulling-up-to-the-car-in-front part. Most people would define parallel parking as pulling up to the car in front, and backing into the spot. But when you go in front first (some might remember the classic Seinfeld episode about this) you are being just as parallel to the parked cars as when you go backwards. In fact, simply driving alongside parked or moving cars is just as parallel as what we consider "parallel parking". So, in response to this discovery, we are renaming parallel parking to reverse linear parking. This is far more accurate to what you are actually doing, as your final parking spot is linear -- not parallel -- to the cars in front and behind you. We encourage you to update your memory banks immediately with this new terminology.
